Washington: Bashar al-Assad’s pursuit of a military victory against his people is sterile.
The United States, on Monday, renewed its call to move forward with a permanent political solution in Syria, considering Bashar al-Assad’s pursuit of a military victory as a futile victory, according to the American embassy in Damascus.
In a statement, the embassy declared, “The Assad family ruled Syria for 50 years, and so far more lives have been lost than they should in Assad’s sterile search for a military victory against his people.” The embassy added: “More than 500,000 people have been killed in Syria, the majority of whom were killed by the regime’s brutal acts, which include widespread arbitrary detention, torture and extrajudicial killing.” She added, “We renew our call to move forward with a permanent political solution to the Syrian conflict, in line with Resolution 2254 of the United Nations Security Council.” It is noteworthy that Resolution 2245 was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council at the end of 2015. Resolution 2245 calls for a political transition in Syria, but Russia later reverted to interpreting the resolution according to its firm vision of supporting Bashar al-Assad, which brought international conferences on Syria into a stalemate.
