Washington vows to hold the Assad regime accountable for its use of chemical weapons in Syria
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that his country would hold the Assad regime accountable for its use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people, pointing to Russia’s responsibility for providing assistance to continue these attacks.
Blinken added that the Assad regime has repeatedly used chemical weapons against the Syrian people, regardless of international resolutions.
“Syria (the Assad regime) has failed to cooperate with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to fully disclose its chemical weapons program and destroy them in a verifiable manner,” he said.
Blinken emphasized that Russia had provided diplomatic and military assistance to the Assad regime to continue using chemical weapons.
He continued, that his country condemns such actions, and called on Russia and the Assad regime to comply with their obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
“There can be no impunity, and we must uphold international law against the use of chemical weapons, otherwise we risk normalizing their use,” concluded the US Secretary of State.
