Geir Pedersen: The international community must show solidarity to find a political and peaceful solution in Syria
Today, Wednesday, the United Nations envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen spoke of his fears due to the calm that controls the liberated areas in northern Syria, warning the Security Council against worsening the military situation at any moment.
Pederson said, “The past ten months have been the quietest in the history of the Syrian conflict, and perhaps this is a fragile calm that could collapse at any moment,” as he put it.
He added, “The international community must show solidarity, in order to find a political and peaceful solution that guarantees the aspirations of all spectrums of the Syrian people,” noting that he continues, through the conduct of the United Nations, to assist the Syrian Constitutional Committee, led by the Syrians.
Pedersen explained that the Syrian Constitutional Committee will resume its work at the fifth session of the mini-committee, next week between January 25 and 29, in Geneva.
According to UN Resolution 2254, all parties must immediately stop launching any attacks against civilian targets, and the resolution urges all member states to support efforts to achieve a ceasefire and asks the United Nations to bring the two parties together to enter into formal negotiations (the Constitutional Committee).
The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, had expressed his confidence that the political process would lead to a fair representation of the desires of all Syrians, in line with its terms of reference approved by the co-chairs.
