Pompeo: Iranian militias are responsible for bombing the US embassy in Baghdad
On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for those responsible for the bombing of the US embassy in Baghdad to be held accountable.
“The Iranian-backed militias attacked again blatantly and recklessly in Baghdad, injuring Iraqi civilians,” Pompeo said.
“The people of Iraq deserve to be prosecuted for these attackers, and these violent and corrupt criminals must cease their destabilizing actions,” he added.
The government security media cell in Iraq issued a statement regarding the bombing of the government green zone in the center of the capital, Baghdad.
In the statement, the cell stated, “An outlaw group launched a number of rockets at the area, which includes a number of embassies of foreign countries in addition to government headquarters.”
It added that the air defense system of the US embassy intercepted two other missiles and detonated them in the air before they fell to the ground.
The cell explained: “It was found that the launch area was from Al-Rasheed Camp (south of Baghdad), and the missiles fell inside the residential complex on a number of Al-Qadisiyah residential complex buildings.”
The cell pointed out that “the bombing caused material damage to these buildings and a number of civilian cars without human losses.”
The United States Embassy in Baghdad condemned the missile attack on its compound in the Green Zone, which it was subjected to yesterday, Sunday, confirming that it resulted in minor damage to the embassy compound without casualties.
In a statement, the embassy called on all Iraqi political and government leaders to take steps to prevent such attacks and hold those responsible accountable.
“These types of attacks on diplomatic facilities constitute a violation of international law and a direct assault on the sovereignty of the government of Iraq,” the embassy added.
