Britain: The presidential elections in Syria are not free and lacking legitimacy
Britain called on the international community to avoid normalization with the Assad regime, based on the results of the presidential elections that Bashar Al-Assad intends to organize next May.
The British envoy to Syria, Nathan Hargreaves, said: “The elections in Syria will neither be free nor fair, nor should any international normalization take place with the Assad regime.”
Hargreaves added in a tweet on his Twitter account: “Any political process in Syria needs the participation of all Syrians in line with the United Nations.”
“The presidential elections that the regime intends to hold are not part of the political process stipulated in Resolution 2254,” the spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, affirmed.
Dujarric indicated that the United Nations is not a party involved in these elections and “there is no mandate for it,” adding: “Resolution 2254 provides for a political process that ends with fair elections according to a new constitution under the auspices of the UN.”
It is noteworthy that Turkey, the United States and other European countries rejected the results of the presidential elections to be held by Bashar al-Assad, as they lack legitimacy.
