Official in “Shanghai Organization”: Bashar al-Assad’s attendance at the summit was not discussed
Uzbekistan’s National Coordinator for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Rahmatullah Nurmbetov, said yesterday that Bashar al-Assad’s attendance the Shanghai summit scheduled for the mid-September wasn’t discussed.
Rahmatullah responded to the journalist’s questions about Bashar al-Assad’s visit to the summit that his attendance wasn’t discussed within the organization’s framework.
It is noteworthy that media websites close to Tehran had previously stated that the Russian president Vladimir Putin was planning to hold a meeting between the Turkish president Erdoghan and Bashar al-Assad on the sidelines of Shanghai summit which is scheduled in Samarkand.
On the other hand, the Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu confirmed that there is no plan to meet with Bashar al-Assad at the summit, saying “Bashar al-Assad is not invited.”
The Syrian file has recently witnessed several political developments, most notably the Turkish statements regarding the normalization of relations with the Assad regime and the reconciliation between the Syrian opposition and the Assad regime.
