Pedersen emphasizes the importance of achieving a successful political transition in Syria
UN Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, met with leader of the new Syrian administration Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus. The two sides held objective and comprehensive discussions confirming the importance of the success of the political transition in the country following the fall of the previous regime.
The office of the UN envoy said in tweets on “X” platform on Monday: “Pedersen stressed the vital importance that the international community attaches to the success of the Syrian transition.”
The office added that Pedersen discussed with al-Sharaa the preparedness and plans of the UN to support the transitional process and the Syria people on a range of joint priorities in line with the principles in UNSCR 2254.
The office confirmed that Syria needs an inclusive and credible political transition led and owned by Syrians, confirming the importance of international support, including taking additional measures concerning the imposed sanctions.
The office pointed out that it is important to respect Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity by all countries, including Israel.
The office stated that Pedersen looks forward to continuing his consultations in Syria during the coming days with a wide spectrum of Syrians, and working on all the issues discussed with Al-Sharaa.
This is the second visit of the UN envoy to Syria since the fall of the previous regime on December 8th.
Pedersen visited Damascus in mid-December, where the two sides discussed issues related to the political scene, the problems of the Syrians, and economic development.
