UNHCR: Lifting sanctions on Syria is a necessity for the return of refugees to their country

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, confirmed that lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria by the European Union and the United States is a necessity to enable the refugees to return to their country and settle there.

Grandi said in a post on “X” platform after his visit to Damascus that “it is necessary to help the Syrian refugees to return to their country.”

Grandi said: “I had a good discussion with the leader of new Syrian administration, Ahmed al-Sharaa, on how to help the Syrian refugees and displaced people return home.”

Grandi added that “many refugees and displaced people have already begun returning home. For the return to be permanent, investments are needed in security, jobs, housing services and lifting the sanctions will be critical.”

Syrian News Agency “SANA” posted footage of the meeting, pointing out that the discussion focused on the shared efforts to enhance the return of Syrian refugees to their home, in addition to discussing cooperation mechanisms between the two sides to address the challenges related to this file.

The leader of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Asaad Al-Shaibani, met with a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, headed by Filippo Grandi, in the capital, Damascus.

The spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, William Spindler, called on the international community to provide the necessary support for the return of Syrian refugees to their country.
