The final statement in Geneva affirms the need to reach a political solution in Syria

The Syrian Negotiating Committee concluded yesterday its meeting with international representatives and UN delegation in the Swiss capital, Geneva. The meetings discussed several issues related to the Syrian file, the most significant is pushing the political process forwards in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254.

The final statement affirmed the need to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria, demanding a continuous support for the “Syrian Constitutional Committee”, conducting free and fair elections, terminating the arbitrary arrest, releasing all the Syrian detainees, and the ongoing support for the ceasefire in the country.

The statement renewed its call for creating the safe conditions for the return of refugees and internally displaced in accordance with the standards of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and providing sufficient and sustainable aids for the displaced, countries, and communities hosting them.
The statement confirmed that there is no military solution to the Syrian crisis, calling for continued support for the mission of United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria Geir Pedersen, and for his tireless efforts to move the political process forward which is sponsored by the United Nations.”

The statement pointed to the need to continue providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and early recovery in various parts of Syria by all means, including the expansion and extension of Security Council Resolution No. 2642, related to cross-border aid delivery.

The meeting, called by the United States, began on Tuesday in the Swiss capital, Geneva, to discuss the Syrian file in the presence of 13 international envoys from several neighboring countries. “Friends of the Syrian People” conference included the United States, Britain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
