Çavuşoğlu: The opposition and the Assad regime must reach an agreement on Syria
The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu affirmed on Saturday during a meeting with civil society organizations and businessmen in Hatay, southern Turkey, the need to find a political solution to the Syrian issue.
Çavuşoğlu said that “the Assad regime and the opposition must reach an agreement on a constitution and a road map that includes an electoral process in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, according to Anadolu Agency.
He stressed that his country supports the territorial integrity of Syria and that it should not be divided, through finding a political solution, as it is the only way to establish unity and cohesion in Syria, pointing out it is the only way to return the Syrians to their country safely, including the Syrians in Turkey who wish to return.
Çavuşoğlu said that “the Assad regime and the opposition must reach an agreement on a constitution and a road map and pointed out that the start of the transitional process in Syria will also be a significant step towards a reconciliation, stressing that Turkey will provide the necessary support for holding fair and transparent elections in Syria under the auspices of the United Nations.
He pointed out that it is necessary not to allow Syria to turn into a den of terrorism directed against Turkey, and that it should not be allowed to be divided, noting that his country is taking all forms of measures and everything necessary to prevent these steps and prevent the division of Syria.
