US State Department: We do not support normalization with the Assad regime, but rather we support a political process in Syria
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Sunday that “we do not support normalization with the Assad regime”, expressing his country’s support for a political process in Syria in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.
Blinken said during an interview with Saudi “Al Arabiya” channel that Turkey has legitimate security interests in Syria, pointing out that his country urged Ankara for de-escalation in Syria.
Blinken stressed that any military operation in Syria will distract efforts to fight ISIS.
Blinken made it clear that his country’s relations with Saudi Arabia are important, historical and have been going on for decades, and are constantly evolving. He also considered that the relationship should reflect common interests and values.
Blinken pointed out that Saudi Arabia has provided significant support to Ukraine to confront the Russian aggression, and that his country is working at the same time with the Kingdom to end the war in Yemen.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price previously said that Washington does not support the rehabilitation of the brutal dictator, Bashar al-Assad, affirming its support for working with allies, partners and the United Nations to ensure a permanent political solution to the Syrian file.
