Turkey: Return of relations with Assad regime contingent on achieving three priorities and principles

Turkish presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kallen identified three key priorities and principles that must be achieved to restore relations with the Assad regime.

This came during a press talk on Turkey’s TV100 channel.

“The first priority of Ankara is to ensure border security and combat terrorism, whatever its name, whether the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, the Democratic Union Party or the People’s Protection Units,” Callen said.

“The second priority relates to the return of Syrian refugees and must be voluntary, willingly and safely.”

“The third basic principle reflects the serious implementation of these actions, because when the situation matures on the Syrian side, when a security environment is created and conditions are created in terms of both human security and economic security, they begin to return.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is scheduled to meet with Assad regime Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in the Russian capital Moscow early next May, in the presence of Russia and Iran.
