Saudi Foreign Minister arrives in Damascus for the first official visit since 2011
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan arrives in Damascus on Tuesday morning for the first time since 2011.
It is considered the first official visit by a Saudi senior diplomat to Syria since the kingdom took an attitude against Assad regime for his committed crimes against the Syrian people.
Media outlets loyal to the Assad regime said that Faisal bin Farhan’s visit will last for several hours as he will meet with senior officials of the Assad regime.
Al Watan newspaper which is loyal to Assad regime reported that the Saudi minister will discuss during his visit to Damascus many files including Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Arab Summit on the 19th of next month, and the most prominent of what came in the recent Jeddah meeting between Arab foreign ministers.
The newspaper quoted Arab sources as saying: “The Assad regime is focusing on strengthening diplomatic relations between Damascus and Arab capitals, with the aim of opening the doors of normalization for more political purposes than returning to the Arab League.”
The visit comes a few days after Assad regime foreign minister Faisal al-Mikdad visited Jeddah, and at a time when Arab countries are discussing Damascus’s possible return to the Arab League.
Saudi Arabia previously cut its diplomatic relations with the Assad regime after the eruption of the Syrian revolution in 2011, due to the violations committed by the Assad regime against its people, as it closed its embassy in Damascus in March 2012.
