Matthew Miller, the Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, said on Sunday that “Washington doesn’t believe that Syria deserves readmission into the Arab League at this time.”
Miller’s statement came after the Arab foreign ministers announced the decision of readmitting Assad regime into the Arab League and resuming the participation of its delegations in the Arab League council’s meetings after Assad regime’s membership has been suspended for 12 years over its crackdown on popular protests.
Miller explained that Washington is skeptical of Assad regime’s willingness to resolve the Syrian crisis, but it confirmed its agreement with the Arab partners concerning the final goals, according to “Reuters” news agency.
Miller pointed out that Washington understands that the partners are seeking direct contact with the Assad regime to put more pressure on finding solution to the Syrian crisis.
The Arab foreign ministers, headed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, agreed during the consultative meeting held on Sunday, in Cairo, to reinstate the Assad regime to the Arab League, while some countries registered their reservations about the decision.
