The Security Council will continue consultations and voting on the aid delivery mechanism into Syria
The UN Security Council will continue consultations regarding the extension of aid delivery mechanism into Syria, after extending its deadline to Tuesday.
The vote scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, was postponed until Tuesday, with the aim of continuing the consultations, according to the British Ambassador to the United Nations Barbara Woodward.
The ambassador added that “The only key to help 4.1 million Syrians who desperately need assistance is to find an understanding.”
The Swiss ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl said that “We have kept only one goal in mind which is “the humanitarian necessity and the needs on the ground” during our work.
The Swiss ambassador also expressed her hope for the discussions, saying that “I hope the vote will take place today because the authorization has expired, and we would like it to continue.”
The Assad regime refused to extend aid delivery from the Bab al-Salama and al-Rai crossings, while it did not object aid delivery from Bab al-Hawa crossing for only six months, according to the pro-government Al-Watan newspaper.
The United Nations said that 4 million people in northwest Syria, most of them women and children, need humanitarian assistance to survive after years of conflict.
