Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed on Monday the support of his country and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries for a political solution in Syria, while preserving Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
This statement came during a press conference at the conclusion of the sixth round of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council strategic dialogue.
Lavrov said that “We spoke in detail about the situation in Syria, and we have a common position to support its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and support the right of Syrians to decide the future of their country,” according to the Syrian state-run news agency “SANA”.
Lavrov emphasized the need to achieve a comprehensive political solution to the crisis, in addition to building relations between Syria and its surroundings.
Lavrov welcomed Assad regime’s return to the Arab League, which positively affects the atmosphere in general in the region.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had previously expressed his hope that the quadripartite meeting, which began today in Moscow, with his counterparts from Syria, Turkey and Iran, would contribute to setting up a roadmap for implementing relations between Damascus and Ankara.
Lavrov stressed the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, pointing that Syria must restore control over all its territories and ensure border security.
