UNHCR: Over 16000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country since the beginning of 2023
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that thousands of Syrian refugees have returned to their country at the start of 2023.
UNHCR issued a report on Sunday, confirming that 16,529 Syrian refugees have returned from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq to Syria, at a daily rate of 91 people, and a monthly rate of 2755.
According to a UN study published last June, 1.1% of Syrian refugees in several Arab countries want to return to Syria within one year.
The study made it clear that the Syrian refugees in Jordan do not intend to return to Syria during the next 12 months.
It is noteworthy that many humanitarian and international organizations have warned of Syrian refugees’ return to their country, whether a voluntary or forcible repatriation.
“Human Rights Watch” is one those organization, which has issued reports stating that refugees who return to Syria have been subjected to massive violations by the Assad regime, such as arrest, torture, and enforced disappearance.
The Assad regime also continues its repeated claims about providing security and service conditions for refugees wishing to return to Syria, and this is what humanitarian organizations warn against.
