EU discusses with Pedersen the developments in Syria
The European Union Delegation to Syria said: “Its members met with UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, to discuss the Syrian developments, after his visit to Damascus.”
The EU Delegation issued the above-mentioned statement in a post on “X” platform.
The EU Delegation added that it supports Pedersen’s efforts to advance on all aspects of the political solution in line with the UNSCR, including the resumption of the Constitutional Committee’s work.
Pedersen had previously said in a briefing during the UN Security Council session on Syria on February 27, 2024, that “he sent official invitations to hold the 9th session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in the Swiss city of Geneva, at the end of the upcoming April.”
Pedersen visited Syria last Sunday, 17 March 2024, and met with the Foreign Minister of the Assad regime, Faisal al-Mekdad, and informed him of the necessity of continuing the Constitutional Committee Meetings in Geneva, after Russia announced that it no longer considered Switzerland a neutral venue for holding meetings, and as a result, the Assad regime did not accept holding the round.
Geir Pedersen stressed earlier the need for the international community to unite to push the political process in line with UNSCR 2254 (2015), including confidence-building measures and resumption the work of the Constitutional Committee.
