The Syrian Opposition agrees to hold the Constitutional Committee meetings in Riyadh
A source in the Syrian Opposition confirmed on Sunday, 7 April 2024, that the opposition delegation in the Syrian Constitutional Committee agreed to hold the next rounds of negotiations in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
According to a high-rank source in the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC), the opposition agreed to hold the next rounds of the Constitutional Committee in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and gave its approval to the UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, according to “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.”
The source pointed out that resuming the work of the Constitutional Committee requires the approval of Saudi Arabia, and the approval of the Assad regime to go to Riyadh to complete the negotiations, after the committee meetings were halted due to Russia and the Assad regime’s refusal to hold the meetings in the Swiss city of Geneva.
Regarding the meeting of the Chairman of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, Badr Jamous, with Pedersen in the Turkish capital, Ankara, last Friday, and discussing alternative places to Geneva, the source said: “The committee did not discuss alternative places, because it originally agreed to Riyadh as a place to hold the rounds. The matter now concerns the other party.”
Jamous discussed with Pedersen on Friday in Ankara the situation in Syria, the necessity of accelerating a political solution, and the responsibility that falls on the Security Council to find binding mechanisms to implement Resolution 2254 strictly and completely, according to a statement by the SNC after the meeting.
In the meeting, Pedersen reviewed with Jamous “the efforts he made during the last period, and the contacts he made with all regional and international parties in his attempts to push the political process forward, and to persuade international parties to work together to support peace efforts in Syria,” according to the SNC’s statement.
