Faisal al-Mekdad discusses with his Emirati counterpart the bilateral relations between the two countries
Assad regime’s Foreign Minister, Faisal al-Mekdad, discussed on Friday, June 7, in a phone call with his Emirati counterpart, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The two sides discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries, the ways to boost them, and the development of cooperation in a way to serve the common interests, According to Emirates News Agency “WAM”.
It is noteworthy that the United Arab Emirates normalized its diplomatic relations with the Assad regime in late 2018 and reopened its embassy in Damascus after closing it for 6 years.
During the past years, Abu Dhabi led an intense diplomatic movement, at the Arab and international levels, to rehabilitate the Assad regime and normalize relations with it.
Syrian president Bashar al-Assad also visited the Emirates in 2022 on his first trip to an Arab state since the outbreak of the revolution in Syria, and then visited it again in 2023.
The head of the Syrian regime accepted last February the credentials of Hassan Ahmed Muhammad Suleiman Al-Shehhi, as “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary” of the United Arab Emirates to Syria, about 13 years after this position became vacant.
