German Foreign Ministry: Conditions for the safe return of Syrian refugees to their country are not available
A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said, “The conditions for the safe return of refugees to Syria are not currently available due to the ongoing violence and violations.”
The Ministry’s statement came after European calls to restore relations with the Assad regime to facilitate the return of refugees.
The spokesman said in a press statement: “The fighting in Syria continues with intensity throughout the country, in addition to reliable reports confirming the continuation of torture and executions, which also affected a number of refugees who have already returned to their country.”
He added: “Few Syrian refugees are currently returning to their country.”
He pointed out: “The United Nations, which has its employees in Syria, maintains its assessment that the conditions for the safe return of refugees are not currently available.”
The European Union spokesman for foreign affairs and security policy, Peter Stano, said earlier: “The European Union’s position on Syria is as it is, no normalization with the Assad regime, no lifting of sanctions, and no aid for reconstruction, until the Assad regime engages constructively in a political process in line with UNSCR 2254.”
It is noteworthy that eight member states of the European Union called for a re-evaluation of the situation in Syria, allowing the return of refugees to this country, on the basis that the situation in Syria has recently witnessed developments for the better.
