Shoigu and Bashar al-Assad discuss international and regional security files
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu discussed with Bashar al-Assad on Monday, September 16, international and regional files, as well as the relations between the two countries, according to sources affiliated with the Assad regime.
This meeting came during Shoyigu’s visit to Damascus, in which Bashar al-Assad said: “The relationship between the two countries is strong despite the difficult tests they have gone through over the past years.”
According to a statement by the Assad regime, “Bashar al-Assad received Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and discussed with him several files.”
The statement made it clear that “the files are related to international and regional security, as well as bilateral relations between Syria and Russia and the prospects for strengthening them to serve the interests of both countries,” without additional details.
In a meeting between Bashar al-Assad and his Russian counterpart Putin on last July 25, in the Russian capital, Moscow, Putin confirmed that “the situation in the Middle East is heading towards escalation, including Syria.”
The last meeting between “Putin and Al-Assad” was held on 15 March 2023 in the Kremlin as well, while the aim of Al-Assad’s visit and its relationship to the supposed normalization with Ankara were not discussed through the statements that were circulated on Russian media.
