UN Commission: Syrians returning from Lebanon are at risk of extortion and detention
The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said that the large numbers of Syrians returning from Lebanon are at risk of extortion, detention and torture.
The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria said in a post on “X” platform: “The Syrian civilians returning from Lebanon are at risk of extortion, arbitrary arrest, torture, disappearance, forced conscription, and killing or injuring.”
The humanitarian response plan for the IDPs is funded by a meagre 25% despite rising civilians’ needs to unprecedented levels with many of them have been uprooted multiple times due to the conflict, according to the UNCoISyria.
The Commission called for ceasefire at the regional level in Syria and for all parties and to respect the laws under the international law of human rights and the international humanitarian law.
The Syrian National Coalition called on the UNHCR to urgently secure the international protection for Syrian refugees who fled from Lebanon to Assad regime-controlled areas.
The Syrian Coalition pointed out that the Syrian refugees are exposed to arbitrary arrest and they should not be left between two options threatening their lives. The Syrian Negotiation Commission called on the UN envoy to Syria to protect the Syrian refugees and prevent the systematically assaults against them, especially after the death of Hezbollah leader.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), the Assad regime arrested a number of refugees returning from Lebanon, especially at border crossings, in addition to mass arrest campaigns in areas on charges of draft evasion.
