Syrian Negotiation Commission calls for the establishment of a monitoring mechanism to protect the Syrians returning from Lebanon
The Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) called on the UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, to form a monitoring mechanism to prevent arresting the Syrians returning from Lebanon.
The SNC held a meeting with Pedersen in Geneva. The head of the SNC, Badr Jamous, confirmed “the necessity for the SNC to take part in this mechanism.”
Jamous said: “The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has to reveal whether there are any guarantees for the return of Syrian refugees from Lebanon.”
Jamous added: “It is necessary to provide the support for Syrian refugees who are unable to return from Lebanon to Syria due to the risks linked with their return, in addition to providing the necessary, observed, and transparent humanitarian relief for refugees returning from Syria, and prohibiting the regime from taking advantage of the aid and assistance provided to them.”
Jamous pointed out: “He presented to Pedersen the political, regional and international situation and its effects on the Syrian issue, and the continued evasion of the Assad regime and its backers from their commitments related to the implementation of international resolutions.”
Jamous pointed out: “It is not possible to achieve true and sustainable peace in the region without resolving the Syrian issue through the full and strict implementation of the Resolution 2254.”
The Syrian Negotiation Commission early on October warned against “the systematic attacks on Syrian refugees and their livelihoods, especially after the killing of Hezbollah militia leader,” calling for them to be protected and not harmed.
Over the past few days, the Syrian-Lebanese border has seen an influx of Syrians and Lebanese fleeing the Israeli bombardment and escalation that affected the region, leaving thousands dead and wounded, including hundreds of Syrians.
