The National Coalition: The EU should take action against Assad regime’s supporters

The Syrian National Coalition urged on Wednesday, November 6, the European Union to put pressure on Assad regime’s supporters in order to authentically engage in the political process.

The Coalition confirmed in a statement the importance of European Union’s commitments to its strategy towards Syria and its development to include further coercion tools.

The National Coalition expressed its appreciation for European Union’s commitment not to normalize with the Assad regime, not to lift sanctions, and not to reconstruct until there is irreversible progress towards the political process and to reach a solution in accordance with the UNSCR 2254.

The aim of such steps is to reach a sustainable solution in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions and, is in the interest of the legitimate aspiration of the Syrian people aiming to reach a state of justice, freedom, and democracy, according to the Coalition.

The Coalition stressed that “the Assad regime’s ongoing approach of repression, arrest, and targeting civilians on a daily basis makes Syria unsafe for the return of refugees.”

The Coalition pointed out that this elevates the responsibility of the international community to activate accountability mechanisms for war crimes and crimes against humanity that have been committed against Syrian civilians.

The European Union spokesman previously confirmed that “the EU’s strategy on Syria is based on the conclusions of the European Union Council for the years 2017/2018, and the conclusions of April 2024 complemented the previous conclusions, but did not replace them, as they were very short and focused.”

The spokesman said: “The EU’s position, as stipulated in successive Council conclusions, has not changed: no normalization with the Assad regime, no lifting of sanctions, and no reconstruction, until the Assad regime participates meaningfully in a political process in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254.”
