Al-Sharaa calls for lifting the sanctions imposed on Syria

The leader of the new political administration in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, called on UK to lift economic sanctions imposed on Syria following the fall of Assad regime.

Al-Sharaa’s call came during a meeting with Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the British Foreign Office, Stephen Hickey, and the UK representative for Syria, Ann Snow, on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024.

Al-Sharaa talked about the important role of Britain internationally, pointing out to the importance of lifting all the sanctions imposed on Syria to enable the Syrians in countries around world to return to their country.

Al-Sharaa said during the meeting with the British envoy: “What happened in Syria is a victory for the oppressed people over the criminal oppressors, and that this victory was without damaging the infrastructure and without any displacement.”

Al-Sharaa confirmed that “the previous regime destroyed everything in Syria, including the country’s institutions, and targeted all the sects, emphasizing the need to build the state of law and institutions and establishing security.”

UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, announced last Sunday that his country is conducting diplomatic contacts with “Hayat Tahrir al-sham” (HTS) in Syria, and it sent a high-level delegation to Damascus to meet the new government.

Lammy also stressed his country’s determination to work diplomatically to help ensure better governance for Syria’s future, stressing the need for the future Syrian government to bring together all parties to achieve the stability and respect that the Syrian people deserve.

Lammy added: “We want to see a representative government, an inclusive government, and we want to see chemical weapons stockpiles secured and not used, and we want to ensure that there is no continuation of violence.”

The UK delegation is considered to be the highest-ranking and first Western delegation to visit Syria and meet with the leader of military operations, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, since the fall of the Assad regime.
