Interpol calls on Lebanon to arrest Jamil al-Hassan and hand him over to the United States

The American Interpol sent a circulated telegram to Lebanon, calling for the arrest of Major General, Jamil al-Hassan, the former head of the Air Force Intelligence for the deposed Assad regime, for committing war crimes and genocide.

Asharq al-Awsat newspaper quoted a Lebanese judicial source as saying: “The American messages called on the judicial and security authorities in Lebanon to arrest al-Hassan if he was on the Lebanese territories or in case, he entered Lebanon and to hand him over to the United States.”

The telegram was circulated intentionally via Interpol which means that al-Hassan might be arrested in any country signing the International Police Convention, according to the source.

The judge issued orders to all the Lebanese security services to arrest al-Hassan in case he is on the Lebanese territories, or if he enters Lebanon in the future.

The arrest order comes in the framework of international prosecution of the former Assad regime officials indicted for committing gross violations against the Syrian people with a special focus on Jamil al-Hassan.

In its turn, Lebanese security sources denied that there are solid information referring to the presence of the former Assad regime officials in Lebanon, but the sources did not rule out the possibility that they might be hidden with the help of pro-local authorities.

Last week, the Lebanese security services arrested 21 officers and members of the Fourth Division, after they entered Lebanon through illegal crossings in the Bekaa and Mount Hermon regions.

Other officers of the former Assad regime’s intelligence services were also arrested in the towns of Akkar, but the military judiciary decided to release them because there were no security files against them.
