Washington: We welcome the positive messages of Syrian government and are committed to helping the Syrians

The US Deputy Ambassador, Dorothy Shea, said that her country welcomes the “positive messages” from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

Shea said in statements during the Security Council sessions on Syria on Wednesday, confirming the US’ support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process in line with UNSCR 2254.

Shea confirmed the importance of establishing a comprehensive and representative government that completely respects the human rights and the fundamental freedoms of all Syrians, including women and diverse communities in Syria.

Shea indicated in her speech to the need for guarantees in the new Syrian government to identify any remaining elements of the chemical weapons program and destroy them safely under international supervision.

Shea stressed the importance of allowing parties in Syria affiliated with the United Nations and civil society access to document information, protect mass graves and prisons, and provide assistance to those released and the families of missing persons.

Shea concluded her speech by saying that the United States “welcomes the positive messages from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, but in the end, we will evaluate progress through actions, not words, because we are looking for actions and words that seek to implement policies that prioritize the well-being of the Syrian people.”
