The United States demands punishment for Assad regime for using chemical weapons against civilians

The US representative of the United Nations, Richard Mills, called on the UN Security Council to hold the Assad regime accountable for its use of chemical weapons against civilians in Syria.

During his videoconference at a Security Council session, Mills said: “The Security Council meets on a monthly basis to push the Assad regime to adhere to the Chemical Weapons Treaty and to fulfill UN Security Council Resolution 2118, yet the Assad regime has not fulfilled these obligations for seven years.”

The American delegate added that international security must assume its responsibilities to show serious sanctions targeting those involved in the use of chemical weapons, stressing that the issue of chemical weapons is not a matter of opinion, but rather a proven fact by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The United States has condemned in the strongest terms the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons in densely populated urban areas.

“One of the council’s tasks is to hold Syria accountable for its use of chemical weapons and for its violation of its obligations towards Resolution 2118,” Mill said, stressing that “the United States supports all accountability efforts, as they are necessary to achieve long-awaited justice for the victims of the Assad regime who need and deserve the support of the international community.”

Mills accused Russia of speeding up its public campaign to discredit the OPCW and its work, “but it cannot deceive the Security Council and the world.”

The investigators of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons accused the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of launching attacks with sarin gas and chlorine in Syria in 2017, amid Russian rejection of the accusations, justifying that “the Western powers have politicized the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.”
