The Security Council holds a closed session of consultations to discuss the results of the Constitutional Committee meetings
Representatives of the member states of the Security Council held a closed session of consultations, yesterday, Tuesday, to hear a briefing presented by the UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen, in Geneva, on the results of the recent Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings.
“I am disappointed by the slow progress in the constitutional committee talks caused by the delegation of the Assad regime,” Pederson told members of the Security Council during his briefing.
“Many diplomats who attended the session believed that the Assad regime used the meetings of the Constitutional Committee with the aim of delaying any real reconciliation process,” said Estonia’s delegate to the United Nations, Seven Jergenson.
Jergenson added: Many diplomats believed that the constitutional committee did not produce any tangible results, and that the Assad regime’s delegation used that process to delay any real reconciliation, he said.
The UN special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced that the fifth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings in Geneva had not made any progress, indicating that the meetings could not continue without changing the way of working.
