Washington: The time has come for a real political solution in Syria
The American delegate to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, said yesterday, Tuesday, “It is time to listen to the voice of the Syrian people, so that we can reach a real political solution.”
This came during her speech at an informal and high-level general meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on Syria.
Greenfield added, “We welcome the offers made by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry and the Syrian civil society, which concluded that the Syrian regime has been guilty of committing terrible war crimes in Syria.”
She emphasized that this month marks the passage of a full decade of suffering in Syria at the hands of the Assad regime, noting that “the General Assembly heard the testimony of a number of Syrians who were present at the meeting to talk about Syria.”
Regarding the suffering of the Syrian people, the American delegate explained that the Assad regime continues to imprison tens of thousands of innocent Syrians, most of them women, children and the elderly.
She concluded by saying: “The Syrians have peacefully defended themselves and democracy for ten years, and the Assad regime responded to them with snipers and tanks, threw explosive barrels and chemical weapons, and prevented humanitarian aid as part of the (starvation and surrender) campaign and systematically arrested tens of thousands and tortured them.”
