Turkey: The Assad regime must be punished for chemical attacks in Syria
The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement, commenting on the second report of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, after an investigation carried out by a team affiliated with it, regarding the chemical attack launched by the Assad regime forces in Syria in 2018.
“Those responsible for the chemical attack launched by the Assad regime forces on the city of Saraqib must be punished, as this event represents a serious violation of international law,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry statement added: “The report of the international organization indicated that the Assad regime forces launched an attack with toxic chlorine gas in Saraqib, 50 km south of Aleppo, February 4, 2018.”
The statement stressed that the organization’s investigation team has reaffirmed the Assad regime’s responsibility for another chemical attack, pointing out that “the attack is a flagrant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, in addition to being a crime against humanity and a war crime.
The statement added: “On this occasion, we reiterate our call for the necessity of not impunity for those responsible for such attacks, as they constitute a serious violation of international law. Turkey will continue to support efforts to hold those responsible accountable, especially the efforts of the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
In its latest report, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons confirmed that the Assad regime had used toxic chlorine gas during its attack on Saraqib in Idlib countryside in 2018.
