UN steps to achieve justice for human rights violations in Syria
A session of the United Nations General Assembly was held today, Thursday, at the headquarters of the international organization on Syria, to discuss ways to investigate and prosecute people responsible for the most serious crimes committed in it.
“We have started taking the first steps to achieve justice for the victims of violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in Syria,” Volkan Bozkir, President of the United Nations General Assembly, said during the session.
Bozkir added, “I am pleased to note that the requests have been received, after paving the way towards justice, and the first steps are being taken in this regard, and member states must continue to support the international mechanism and adequately finance it.
He pointed out: “The commission is mandated to collect evidence related to violations of international humanitarian law to facilitate fair criminal procedures in the courts,” noting that the association has established a team called “the international, impartial and independent mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the most serious crimes in Syria under international law.”
He stressed the need to extend the mechanism for cross-border humanitarian aid to Syria, and said: “It is a shame that after 10 years of conflict in Syria, we still call for humanitarian aid to reach this country,” calling for discussing “fair and comprehensive accountability and justice among the prerequisites for reconciliation. And the political process in Syria ”.
“I hope that the process of decisive cross-border assistance by the United Nations will continue, and I call on the member states concerned (members of the UN Security Council) to ensure that this mandate is extended beyond next July,” the President of the UN Assembly concluded.
