European concern about Denmark’s intention to return refugees to Syria

European Union immigration official Elva Johansson said she is concerned about Denmark’s intention to return Syrian refugees to their country, despite mounting pressure from human rights defenders and civil society organizations.

“I raised the matter with Copenhagen, and the government assured me that it will not be forced to deport,” Johansson added, according to what was reported by Reuters news agency.

She stressed that no one can be forced to return to Syria, expressing her doubts that refugees who cannot be returned should withdraw their right to work or study, and this is a matter of concern to her.

For his part, Danish Immigration Minister Matthias Tesfay said, “Denmark has been open and honest from day one, and that the residence permit for Syrian refugees is temporary and can be canceled if there is no longer a need for protection.”

“When conditions improve, the former refugees should return to their homeland and restore their lives there,” he added.

The Danish government had begun providing money to the Syrians in exchange for leaving the country in 2019, at about 175,000 Danish kroner (28,000 US $ 827) per person, according to “Reuters”, which indicated that at least 250 Syrian citizens had voluntarily returned to Syria in equal measure that support ever since.
