Britain supports Turkey’s position rejecting the Assad regime elections in Syria
Britain has expressed its support for Turkey’s position rejecting the presidential elections for the Assad regime, which will be held next May.
The British Special Representative for Syria, Jonathan Hargreaves, said in a tweet, “We agree with Turkey that the presidential elections announced by the Assad regime are inconsistent with Security Council Resolution 2254.”
He added, “Any political process needs the participation of all Syrians, in reference to the displaced and refugees.”
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a written statement on April 23, “The elections will be unfair, and the international community cannot accept their legitimacy, in addition to preventing about 7 million Syrian refugees from voting.”
On the 18th of this month, the Assad regime announced the opening of the door for candidacy in the presidential elections and moving forward with its play, in a move that would undermine the efforts for a political solution sponsored by the United Nations under Law 2254.
