The National Coalition calls on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the escalation of the Assad regime forces in Idlib countryside
The Syrian National Coalition warned against the escalation of the Assad regime in the Idlib countryside, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the situation in Syria, and to take the necessary steps to impose the political path on the Assad regime.
This came in a statement by the National Coalition yesterday, commenting on the escalation of the Assad regime forces in several areas of Idlib countryside, and the injury of civilians, including children, in a continuous violation of the cease-fire agreement in force since March 2020.
The statement said: “The National Coalition warns against the continued silence of the international community and the parties sponsoring the political solution in Syria regarding the escalation operations, violations and crimes of artillery and missile shelling carried out by the Assad regime forces against civilian and rural areas in Idlib.”
He explained that Assad’s forces and Iranian militias have not stopped their attempts to advance, bombard and target civilian areas in the southern countryside of Idlib over the past period, in addition to their continuous and repeated targeting of villages and towns, which caused civilian casualties and material losses.
The statement added: “These repeated attacks represent a violation of the de-escalation agreement, and require a measure that puts an end to the strategy of Assad’s forces aimed at heating up the situation and keeping the atmosphere of war tense in order to escape any alternative options.”
The coalition stressed that the Assad regime and its allies will not stop “these attempts, schemes and crimes,” calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the situation in Syria, and to take the necessary steps to impose the political path on the regime and prevent any new violation or attempt to impose the language of terrorism, killing and destruction as an alternative to a political solution.
Yesterday, Assad’s forces renewed their artillery bombardment on the villages of Jabal al-Zawiya in the southern countryside of Idlib, targeting agricultural fields in the vicinity of Sarja village, in addition to the village of Arnaba, in which a girl and a young man were injured.
During the summer harvest season in May and June, the regime forces deliberately bombard agricultural lands and crops in the seam areas in northwestern Syria and the Al-Ghab Plain area in the western Hama countryside, to deprive the population of their main sources of livelihood.
