The Washington Institute report clarifies Russia’s goal of escalation in Idlib before the summit in Geneva
The Washington Institute for Near East Policy explained, in a report, that “Russia’s goal in the escalation in Idlib governorate is to deliver two messages about the Syrian file to US President Joe Biden, ahead of the summit scheduled to be held in Geneva with Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
The institute stated in its report that “the first message that Putin wanted to convey to Biden is that Idlib is still run by a “terrorist” group classified by Washington, so providing humanitarian aid to that region is not necessary.”
The report pointed out that the second message is that nothing Washington does does not change the fact that Russia has all the military influence in Syria, and continues to pursue its policies from a position of strength.
The report also stated that although “Tahrir al-Sham” is not an ally of Washington, the Russian attacks are another way for Putin to assert that “it is he who controls the future of Syria.”
The report added that the Russian attacks on “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” in Idlib, aim to thwart the American goals in Geneva, and the efforts made to preserve the mechanism for the delivery of UN aid to Syria across the border.
The report warned that the continuation of the “modest approach” of US policy in Syria would only lead to more Russian “muscle flexing,” and called on the United States to adopt a stronger policy toward Russia.
