Russia calls for halting the extension of aid delivery mechanism to northern Syria
The Special Representative of the Russian President on Syrian affairs, Alexander Lavrentiev, called for stopping the extension of the mechanism of aid delivery across the Syrian border, in a move to put pressure on the Syrian opposition and the liberated areas.
Lavrentiev said: “The aid must reach through Damascus,” noting that “the aid that reaches Idlib is politicized and the militants prevent it from reaching civilians,” as he put it.
Russian media sites reported that the Astana talks would discuss extending the UN mandate to deliver UN aid across the border, which ends on July 10, and mentioned that the new draft resolution submitted by Ireland and Norway calls for expanding the mandate and reopening the Yarubiya crossing with Iraq, while Washington calls for the opening of a third crossing in Bab
Safety besides Bab al-Hawa, which is currently working.
The international meeting began, with the participation of Turkey, Russia, Iran, the Syrian opposition government and the Assad regime, at a time when all previous meetings within the Astana format did nothing but delay and give the Assad regime more time to continue its criminality.
