Pedersen calls on all parties to calm down in Daraa city
Yesterday, Saturday, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen called for calm in the city of Daraa, stressing that the people did not want to be displaced and leave their homes.
Pedersen said in a statement that he is “following with great concern the developments in southwestern Syria, and is in active contact with the concerned parties to ensure the cessation of violence in Daraa,” calling on all parties to calm down.
He stressed “the need to adhere to the principle of protecting civilians and international humanitarian law,” recalling “the messages he received from the people of Daraa that they did not want to leave their homes.”
Pedersen pointed out that this escalation and tension in the southwest demonstrates the need for everyone in Syria to agree on a nationwide ceasefire, in line with Security Council resolution 2254 (2015).
The UN envoy considered that “the escalation of tension in the southwest demonstrates the need for everyone in Syria to agree on a nationwide ceasefire.”
It is noteworthy that the Daraa governorate witnessed an attack by the Assad regime forces on the Daraa Al-Balad area, and the bombing of residential neighborhoods, and this is a violation of the settlement and reconciliation agreement, which was held in 2018 under the auspices of Russia, and tension spread to most parts of the governorate, and as a result at least 16 people fell as a result of the victims, including four children and a woman, most of them were killed as a result of the bombing on their homes.
