Swiss website: Talks between Russia and America discussed the Syrian issue and several other files
In a report, the Swiss “Swissinfo” website revealed recent talks between US and Russian officials at the headquarters of the US diplomatic mission in Geneva, Switzerland.
The website stated that the talks between Russia and the United States focused mainly on discussing the issue of nuclear stability, in addition to discussing the Syrian file and several other files.
During the past few days, American and Russian media indicated that there were advanced discussions between Washington and Moscow on several issues of common interest between the two countries, including the Syrian file.
Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, confirmed in statements to the Russian “Sputnik” agency, that his country expects to facilitate the process of reaching a comprehensive political settlement of the Syrian file in coordination with the American side.
In the context of his speech, the Russian official suggested that more understandings would be obtained about the situation in Syria with the US administration, especially after the convergence of views between the two sides in the Security Council on the decision of the mechanism for the entry of humanitarian aid into Syria across the border.
For his part, a US State Department official alluded to the existence of talks with the Russian side, describing them as professional and objective, without mentioning any additional details about those discussions.
Meanwhile, the Russian “TASS” news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying that the Americans “expressed their readiness to conduct a constructive dialogue in the talks.”
While diplomatic sources familiar with the secret talks that took place between Russia and America in the city of “Geneva” recently confirmed that the two sides agreed to meet again next September.
The sources revealed that the US delegation was headed by US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, while the Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, who both have a mandate from their presidents to launch a well-thought-out and strong dialogue between the two countries.
Last January, Russia agreed to extend the “New START” treaty to reduce nuclear weapons with the United States for a period of 5 years, just days before its expiration.
