Humanitarian organizations: the health sector is about to collapse in northwest Syria due to the outbreak of Coronavirus

Yesterday, Monday, humanitarian organizations operating in northwestern Syria warned of the approaching collapse of the health sector in the region due to the outbreak of the Corona virus and the arrival of the pandemic to its climax.

The organizations confirmed in the statement that, in cooperation with the local health directorates and the World Health Organization, they made their efforts to contain the pandemic last year, noting that they were able to overcome the past crisis with minimal losses without the collapse of the health system.

The statement indicated that the current wave of the Corona virus in northwestern Syria has reached a dangerous level, as reports indicate that the pandemic has reached uncontrolled with a limited ability of the health sector to control it.

The statement pointed out that what makes the situation worse is that a number of health personnel are infected with the virus and stop working, which paralyzes the health system, and that the simplest diseases will become a cause of death due to the lack of medical personnel.

The organizations stated that if the news of a new military campaign in northwestern Syria is confirmed, it will cause the displacement of the people, which will worsen the situation.

The statement stated that the response to the pandemic consisted in equipping specialized medical facilities, distributing protective equipment to medical staff, in addition to distributing masks and launching awareness campaigns targeting people to raise awareness of the damages of the virus, in order to avoid the pandemic reaching its climax, but commitment to preventive measures at the top is still below. required limit.

The statement stressed that humanitarian organizations and health directorates are making efforts to allocate more support to prevent the collapse of the health system, noting that the largest health systems could not withstand the pandemic without the cooperation of parents and decision-makers.

The organizations appealed to the local authorities to impose all preventive measures in the region, to assume their responsibility towards society and not to leave it to its inevitable fate, noting that the countries that firmly imposed preventive measures succeeded in preventing the collapse of the health sector and keeping the pandemic under control.

The organizations demanded to impose the wearing of masks on all people, in public places, markets, and means of transportation, and to suspend work in schools and universities until the health directorates announce that the situation allows the resumption of work, and to replace it with a tele-education.
