Pedersen heads to Damascus to discuss the possibility of holding a new round of “Constitutional Committee” meetings

Arab diplomatic sources announced that the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, will visit the Syrian capital, Damascus, next Tuesday, after talks he held yesterday with the senior assistant of Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Asghar Khaji.

The sources indicated that Pedersen will discuss with the Assad regime’s Foreign Minister, Faisal Miqdad, the possibility of holding a seventh round of the constitutional committee’s meetings in Geneva.

Pedersen stressed, during Khaji’s interview, the need to continue the Syrian political process and continue talks within the framework of the Constitutional Committee’s meetings, and stressed the importance of expanding humanitarian aid, as an important element in resolving the Syrian crisis.

The sources suggested that this tour would be postponed to the beginning of next February, noting that Pedersen will go after his visit to the Assad regime’s areas to Brussels to participate in the meeting of the international coalition against ISIS.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee, consisting of representatives of the Assad regime, the opposition, and civil society, officially launched in Geneva on October 30, 2019, to draft a new constitution for the country.
