The United Nations will vote on suspending Russia from Human Rights Council
The United Nations General Assembly will vote today on the resolution to suspend Russia from the U.N. Human Rights Council over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
General Assembly spokeswoman Paulina Kubiak said to journalists yesterday: “The General Assembly will hold on Thursday a session to vote on the resolution of suspending the rights of Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council.”
Kubiak pointed out that “to be approved on the resolution, it requires the approval of a two-thirds majority of the member states of the United Nations General Assembly.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield called on Tuesday in a session of the international security council to suspend Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council due to the crimes committed in Ukraine.
she also said: ” Russia should not have a position of authority in the Human Rights Council, this body that aims to promote respect for human rights.”
The US ambassador added “we should not allow Russia to use its seat on the Council as a tool of propaganda to suggest they have a legitimate concern about human rights.”
There was no immediate comment from Moscow about the US ambassador’s statements or the United Nations General Assembly session.
Earlier on February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, which has been met with angry international reactions and the implementation of “tough” economic and financial sanctions on Moscow.
