United Nations: Little progress has been made in the file of Syrian detainees
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced that “little progress has been made in the file of detainees in Syria.
This came in a side event organized by the United Nations in preparation for the “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” conference, to be held in the Belgium capital, Brussels, next Monday and Tuesday, with the aim of mobilizing support for Syria for 2022.
Michel said: “The right to know the fate of the detainees is an integral part of achieving any form of accountability for the violations and crimes committed in Syria.”
Michele added: “the status quo is unsustainable, and that’s not just my opinion, nearly every person my Office has spoken with over the past months raised this point. Little progress has been made to provide answers and support to families of missing persons”.
She noted the ” the courage, strength, and determination of so many family associations and other civil society organizations in advocating for the rights of families and the missing holds us all to account.”
She called for “the creation of a new institution that can reveal the fate and whereabouts of missing persons and provide support to families.”
The European Commission is holding the “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region” conference, which will be the tenth conference on Syria, after three conferences hosted by Kuwait between 2013 and 2015, the London conference in 2016, and the last five Brussels conferences since 2017.
