European Union: Russia is leading the world to a food crisis
The European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stressed that “Russia is putting the world at risk of starvation through its unjustified war against Ukraine and its occupation of Ukrainian ports.”
The statement came in an article published on his official blog yesterday explaining, “That the number of undernourished people around the world today is 323 million, and we must urgently enable Ukraine to export its grain through the Black Sea.”
Borrell said: “We are ready to work with the United Nations to prevent any unwanted impact on global food security; we also see a “battle of narrative” around Russian grains and fertilizer exports, and our sanctions do not target these exports.”
President Vladimir Putin is accused of creating a global food crisis by “turning the Black Sea into a war zone, shelling arable land of Ukraine, attacking farm equipment, warehouses, markets, roads, bridges in Ukraine, blocking Ukraine’s ports, and preventing Ukraine from exporting shipments of grain and fertilizers to global markets.”
Borrell pointed out “Russia is working to blackmail everyone who opposes its aggression in Ukraine.”
He indicated, “Many experts warn that the worst is yet to come if Ukrainian exports remain blocked until the next harvest, especially since several countries have imposed unilateral restrictions on their own agricultural exports.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has warned earlier this month that millions of people could starve because of Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, and that the world is on the brink of a “terrible food crisis”.
