Britain calls for an end to Assad regime’s violations and unimpeded access for monitors to detention sites
The United Kingdom’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Simon Manley, called on Wednesday for the need to stop Assad regime’s violations and its supporters, and that independent monitors must be granted unimpeded access to detention centers in Syria saying, “Enough is enough.”
Manley delivered a statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria at the Human Rights Council saying, “the situation in Syria remains dire.”
He clarified that “the Assad regime and its allies continue to systematically violate the human rights of Syrian people across the country.”
He added, “The situation is deeply horrifying as we continue to hear about Assad regime and its allies using sexual and gender-based violence in places of detention.”
Syrian women and the majority of UN Security Council member states have previously called on the Assad regime to release thousands of detainees in its prisons, and the necessity of immediate access to all detainees in detention centers.
According to the data of the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the number of male and female detainees in the prisons of the Assad regime has reached nearly 132,000, from March of 2011 until May of 2022.
