Russia proposes 6-month extension of cross-border aid delivery to Syria
The Associated Press reported that Russia has agreed to continue humanitarian aid delivery from Turkey to northwest Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing for only six months, not a year.
Russia proposed amendments to the Irish and Norwegian draft resolution to reduce the time frame of cross-border humanitarian aid delivery to 6 months instead of 12 months. According to the Russian draft obtained by the Associated Press.
The Russian proposal also calls for increased efforts to ensure “full, safe, and unhindered” delivery of aid across the conflict lines within Syria.
The Russian draft indicated that the UN Security Council votes, today, Thursday, on extending the mandate of Resolution 2585, to resume cross-border humanitarian aid delivery to Syria.
It is noteworthy that on June 9, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mechanism of humanitarian aid delivery to Syria for one year and expires this Sunday on July 9.
