The Algerian Foreign Ministry confirms that the Assad regime will not participate in the upcoming Arab summit
The Algerian foreign ministry issued a statement yesterday, confirming that Assad regime will not participate in the upcoming Arab summit scheduled for the next November.
The statement pointed out that the Algerian foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra held a phone call with Assad regime’s foreign minister Faisal al-Mikdad, who indicated that his country prefers not to raise the issue of resuming Syria’s membership in the Arab League during the upcoming Arab summit.
The statement added, “Syria’s relationship with the Arab League was among the issues discussed on this occasion.”
The Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune made it clear during an interview with local media outlets last July that Algeria is seeking the participation of the Assad regime in the upcoming Arab summit in his country at the beginning of next November.
Tebboune claimed that there is an understanding by the Assad regime as it confirmed that it would not be the reason to divide the parties, and the contacts continue between the Arab countries concerning this participation.
The Algerian foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra had previously visited Syria on last July 24, which is considered the first announced visit of an Algerian official to Syria since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011.
