European Union: The conditions are not available for the return of Syrian refugees

The European diplomat Dan Stoenescu said during an interactive meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, who is on visit to Syria, that “all Syrians have the right to return home, but conditions are not yet available.”

Stoenescu confirmed on Tweeter, “What is required first is to create conditions for safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees and the internally displaced people in accordance with the international law and the principle of non-refoulement.”

He made it clear that “the European Union supports the continuous work and assessment of United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees in Syria, pointing out that UNHCR has a clear mandate to protect refugees and promote sustainable solutions to their cause.”

He stressed that “the EU will support the return operations which are facilitated by the UN at the appropriate time, as soon as the conditions become available.

The European Union had previously confirmed in its statements its commitment to a durable political solution in Syria, and that normalization with Bashar al-Assad regime, the reconstruction of Syria, and lifting the sanctions are out of the question unless the war ends.
