WHO: Cholera outbreak is a new threat facing Syria
The World Health Organization has warned of a serious threat facing Syria in light of people’s suffering imposed by the ongoing war for over 10 years until today.
The WHO representative in Syria, Dr Eman al-Shenqiti, said until September 13, 2022 the Cholera disease has spread in 5 Syrian governorates (Aleppo, Lattakia, Damascus, Deir Ezzor, and al-Hasaka).
Al-Shenqiti added: “While some cases have been recorded in some Syrian governorates, more suspected cases have been recorded in other governorates,” pointing out that the possibility of the outbreak remains high in the country.
Al-Shenqiti confirmed that the WHO is working closely with the Health Ministry and other health partners to contain the epidemic, prevent the spread of infection, promote surveillance to identify, diagnose and treat cases, scale up national capacities, and ensure the implementation of health measures through conducting communication strategies.
The “Cholera” is considered a bacterial disease which spreads through contaminated water. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, and if left untreated, it can be fatal within hours.
